Chevron Ecuador Lawsuit – Turned Around News Media Coverage in Fraudulent Lawsuit by Plaintiffs

The Task

Singer Associates provides strategic communications counsel and media outreach on behalf of Chevron Corporation for the company’s response to a multi-billion lawsuit filed against it in Ecuador for alleged environmental damages.

The Solution

The long-running legal battle came to a head as Chevron unearthed significant evidence of fraud and misconduct on the part of the plaintiffs’ legal team. Singer Associates helped bring these developments to public light through securing favorable media coverage, as well as updating each day Chevron’s first issue-based blog, The Amazon Post (www.theamazonpost.com).

Our agency was credited with creating an aggressive strategy for Chevron to help the company tell its story to the news media, shareholders, employees and target audiences. The San Francisco Chronicle wrote in 2013: “That aggressive strategy (against the plaintiffs) has worked wonders, putting Chevron’s opponents on the defensive and convincing many people that the Ecuador suit is a sham. And you can trace much of that strategy back to a memo by San Francisco’s master of crisis communications, Sam Singer.”

In 2014, Chevron won a RICO lawsuit against the lead plaintiff, Steven Donziger, in Federal District Court in New York that continues to assist in exposing the fraud against the oil company. Our agency works with Chevron’s public affairs staff, general counsel R. Hewitt Pate and the company’s legal counsel Gibson Dunn & Crutcher on this litigation.
