Case Study

Preventing a BART Strike and Labor Issues

The Task

When a BART strike threatened to cripple the Bay Area in the summer of 2009, Singer Associates was hired to lead the public relations effort for BART management.

The Solution

BART had to close a $249 million, four-year budget deficit amid declines in ridership, state transit funding and sales tax revenue. Labor negotiations with the Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU), Service Employees International Union (SEIU) and the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) ran on for months. In the end, Singer Associates helped avoid a strike and achieve millions of dollars in savings for BART by building support around the Bay Area for the management’s position. Our agency built and ran a news website for BART and helped manage communications.
