Lincoln Elementary surprised by Chevron

A first grade class at Lincoln Elementary received new supplies Thursday morning thanks to Chevron and an online education charity.

The class’ teacher, Kaitlin Schiff, submitted a proposal requesting books, math games and other classroom materials.

“Extra materials make school so much more engaging, that’s where this program helps,” Schiff said.

Schiff’s classroom was packed with press, school district officials and representatives from Chevron and DonorsChoose.org.

The giveaway was part of the partnership between the energy giant’s “Fuel Your School” campaign and the online charity, which links public school teachers with corporate and individual donors.

Chevron’s campaign uses proceeds from gasoline sales from participating stations during October. For every eight or more gallons purchased, Chevron donates $1 to classroom projects in about 640 Contra Costa and Alameda County schools.

DonorsChoose.org has been partnered with Chevron’s campaign for two years. The online service allows teachers to post proposals outlining their classroom needs, which potential donors browse.

Schiff spent much of her time Thursday presenting the new donated materials to her students.

Schiff said the stacks of new nonfiction books would enable the children to read at a range of levels and explore ideas.

“They’ll gain content knowledge about social studies, science and the world,” Schiff said.
