San Francisco Officials Applaud Progress On Transbay Transit Center

Public officials gathered at the site of the new Transbay Transit Center in downtown San Francisco Wednesday to celebrate the end of the first phase of the project.
Last year, at just about this time, a groundbreaking was held to mark the beginning of the Transbay Transit Center. Wednesday’s event was a celebration of what has transpired since then: the completion of the demolition of the old Transbay terminal, the start of the foundation work, and the release of the new Transit Center District Plan.
“The project is on budget and on schedule,” said Executive Director Maria Ayerdi-Kaplan. “We had over 55,000 hours of labor work completed without any accidents or injuries.”
Mayor Ed Lee took the microphone to stress the changes the project will bring to downtown.
”We do need a brand new transit center that is not only modern and has all of the amenities, but represents the future of our city,” said Lee.
With parks, shopping, housing, high rise office buildings and, of course, transit, this over 11 acre site seems destined to become a whole new neighborhood South of Market.
